Obituary

Ishpeming – William H. Rice, age 78, of 772 Wabash St. Ishpeming, passed away at 3:45am on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming Twp. where he had resided for the past 3 ½ years.

William was born March 18, 1934 in Negaunee to Richard & Beatrice (Mitchell) Rice. Bill served his country in the United States Navy, Army and National Guard of Michigan. Bill owned and operated Bill's Standard Station in Iron Mountain prior to be employed by Cleveland Cliffs for 31 years; he retired in 1991 as a Supervisor at the Tilden Mine.

Bill was an active sportsman who enjoyed fly, steelhead, and brook trout fishing along with deer hunting. Bill coached his son's Little League team, Rotary and was an avid Detroit Tigers fan. Bill enjoyed playing cribbage and going to the casino.

Bill is survived by his wife Alice (Matchett) Rice, whom he married on June 27, 1959, three sons: Tim Rice of Homestead, WI, Terry Rice of Bay City, MI and Todd Rice of Negaunee, a sister Geraldine "Geri" (Bill) Kipling of Ishpeming, 10 grandchildren: Danielle, Billy, Eric, Brent, Jake, Lauren, Andrea, Amanda, Dale and Stephanie, two great grandchildren: Desirae and Valerie, special cousin Alice Ward, special niece Marcia Gudegast, special friends at the Mather Nursing Center, especially Steven "Q-Ball" Davis along with numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Richard, Donald and Lowell and four sisters: Rhoda, Marion, Elaine and Elizabeth.

Funeral services for Bill will be celebrated at 2:00pm on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. Scott Lindenberg to officiate.

Bill's family will greet relatives and friends at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Thursday from 12:30pm until the time of service at 2:00pm.

The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380 will conduct Military Honors.

Pallbearers will be Billy Jack, Eric, Brent, Jake and David Rice and Michael Trewhella.

A luncheon will be held at the Ishpeming V.F.W. following the funeral service.
