Obituary

ELY TOWNSHIP, MI – William “Bill” H. Terres, age 63, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, June 13, 2026.

Bill was born on April 20, 1963, in Negaunee, Michigan, to Frederick and Carol (Durocher) Terres. He attended Negaunee Area Schools and graduated from Negaunee High School with the Class of 1981.

From an early age, Bill enjoyed sports and the friendships they fostered. As a child, he loved playing baseball, and during high school he assisted with the football and basketball teams. Following graduation, he entered the workforce and held a variety of jobs before answering a greater call to serve his country. Bill enlisted in the United States Navy in 1985 and proudly served until receiving an honorable discharge in 1992. After his military service, he continued his education and earned an Associate Degree in Business.

Bill later found great enjoyment on the softball field and around the cribbage board, where he was always ready for a game and the company that came with it. A true Yooper at heart, he cherished time spent hunting and fishing and appreciated the simple joys of the outdoors.

In 2005, Bill met his wife, Jennifer Rantanen, after mutual friends arranged a date. Their connection was immediate, and they were married on May 19, 2007, during a snowy Upper Peninsula spring day. Together they shared a life built on faith, family, and unwavering devotion. They were members of Hope Free Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ishpeming.

While Bill enjoyed many hobbies and accomplishments, those who knew him best will remember him not for what he did, but for who he was. Caring and loving are the words most often used to describe him. He was the rock of his family, a steady presence who could always be counted on when someone needed help, advice, or simply a listening ear. Bill had a remarkable ability to put others before himself, making sure those around him were cared for and supported. Whether helping a family member, a friend, or a neighbor, he never hesitated to lend a hand. Bill would give you the shirt off his back—and then apologize that it wasn’t a nicer one. His heart was simply too big for this world. Whether you needed a midnight jump‑start, a place to stay, or someone who would listen without a hint of judgment, Bill was always the first to show up and the last to leave.

His kindness, generosity, and selflessness touched countless lives. He looked out for the people he loved and found his greatest happiness in making life better for others. To his family, he was a source of strength and comfort. To Jennifer, he was a devoted husband and her safe place. He was a beloved son-in-law, a cherished friend, and a man whose presence made those around him feel valued and cared for.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 19 years, Jennifer Terres; children, Marla Riutta, Kyle Riutta, Shaun Riutta, and Michael Terres; and his parents-in-law, Margo and Ron Rantanen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Carol Terres.

Cremation will take place, and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Details will be announced when available.
