Ishpeming – William D. "Bill" Sheldon, age 81 of 434 Greenwood St., went to be with the Lord at 5:20pm on Monday April 11, 2011 at the Marquette General Hospital.
William was born January 29, 1930 in Marquette, MI the son of the late William J. and Viola (Gentz) Sheldon. He was a graduate of the Graveraet High School, and annually organized the "Class of 1947" reunion. William served with the Michigan Army National Guard at the Ishpeming Armory for 40+ years, retiring as Chief Warrant Officer III in 1988, and was honored to have served on the Governor's Twenty Rifle Team in the 70's.
Bill was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church. He was one of the founding board members of the Ishpeming Community Federal Credit Union which he served on for several years. Bill enjoyed time spent at camp on the Dead River, hunting, and his adventures via snowmobile. He had served as captain of the Rainbow Bar Cribbage Team for many years. In his retirement years he took up golf and was a member at the Wawonowin Country Club, and enjoyed his daily trips around town to coffee clutch with his buddies at Merrick's and Buck's.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years Barbara Sheldon of Ishpeming, two daughters – Patty Sheldon of Marquette and Pam (Mike) Williams of Shelburne Falls, MA, 3 sons – James (Roberta) Sheldon of Baraga, Dave (Annette) Sheldon of Apple Valley, MN, and Brian Sheldon of Ishpeming, 3 brothers Jack (Rachel) Sheldon of San Luis Obispo, CA, Don (Pat) Sheldon of Marquette, and Bruce (Suzanne) Sheldon of Negaunee, a sister Mary (Ray) Mallette of Marquette, 10 grandchildren,12 great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 10 – 11am on Thursday April 14, 2011 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. A Memorial service will follow at 11:00am on Thursday at the Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Military honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380, with members of the Michigan National Guard serving as honorary pallbearers. Inurnment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
