Republic- Whit E. Brooks, age 87, Republic area resident, passed away peacefully on Thursday July 16, 2020 at his home while in the loving care of his wife and UP Home Health and Hospice.

Whit was born in Middlesboro, KY on June 5, 1933 son of the late Whit H. and Thelma (Williamson) Brooks. He graduated from Monroe High School before enlisting in the United States Marines and then the United States Army from which he was honorably discharged from both ending his service in January of 1955. Following Whit's military service he went on to work at Cooks Sportland for many years, eventually purchasing the business and becoming the owner operator until 1988.

Whit was known to enjoy hunting, fishing, being outdoors, and spending time with his family and friends.

Whit is survived by his wife of 60 years- Carol A. (Helmick) Brooks, sister- Margie (Hank) Kanavel, brother-in-law- Douglas (Coleen) Helmick, sister-in-law- Judy (Earl) Gander, along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, brother-in-law- Richard Helmick, and nephew- Keith Helmick.

Following Whit's wishes, cremation will take place with his cremains to be scattered at his favorite "hunting spot" in 2021 so that out of town family and friends are able to attend, a memorial service will also take place at that time.
