Negaunee - Wayne W. "Waynomaki" Johnson, age 73, of 36 County Road 510 Negaunee Twp., passed away on Monday, March 18, 2019 while in the loving care of his family and the Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice at his home.
Wayne was born in Salt Lake City, UT on December 3, 1945, the son of the late Jean (Mayo) and LaVelle Johnson. Wayne grew up in Utah and was a graduate of East High School. He served in the United States Army. Wayne had worked at the Hercules Powder Co. in Utah, for the Civil Service at Hill Air Force Base in Utah, and K.I. Sawyer Air Base locally and served in the Utah National Guard. He was employed as a Production Truck Driver for CCI at the Empire Mine for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. for 17 years.
Wayne was musically inclined and could play the piano and guitar. He enjoyed country music especially Waylon Jennings. He loved to trout fish, panning for gold or tinkering with anything that was in need of repair. Wayne had served had Negaunee Township Supervisor from 2004 - 2008. He will be remembered by many for his sense of humor and witty one-liners.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Pat E. (Potila) Johnson of Negaunee, 4 children, Derek Johnson of Negaunee; Patricia (Scott) Kautz of Ishpeming; Kelly (Frank) Carlson of Ishpeming; Devon (Courtney) Johnson, of Ishpeming; two sisters, LeAnn (Bob) Hunt, of Clearfield, UT; Sharron (Sonny) Potila, of McKinney, TX;16 grandchildren - Logan, Alec and Chloe Johnson, Brandi, Nicole, Amber, Scott Jr. and Hunter Kautz, Justin Hatch, Zachary, Derek and Peter Carlson, Kelli DaLessio, Allie, Brooke and Gunnar Johnson, 4 great grandchildren - Hailey, Kylah, Beau and Bash, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother Jean Chapman, step-father Ted Chapman, father LaVelle Johnson and brother David Johnson.
Visitation will be held 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Monday, March 25, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. A Memorial Service will follow at 12:00 PM on Monday with the Rev. Stacy Pethke officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church hall. Interment will take place at the Utah Veterans Cemetery.
