Obituary

National Mine- Walter R. "Moon" Mannikko, age 54, National Mine resident passed away Saturday, December 3, 2022, at UP Health System Marquette, where he had been a patient since Oct 1, 2022.

Walter was born in Ishpeming, Michigan on May 24, 1968, a son of Sandra L. (Steede), and the late David W. Mannikko. He graduated from Westwood High School, class of 1987.

Wally proudly served his country in the U.S. Marines Corps. He was an avid reader, and had vast knowledge of shipwrecks on the Great Lakes. He had an extensive model train collection.

He is survived by his mother Sandy Ostola of National Mine, his siblings John (Shannon) Mannikko of Goodman, WI, Marlo (Larry) Barnett of Green Bay and Niccole Mannikko of National Mine, 4 nephews and a niece: Logan, Katlyn, Tyler and Layne Barnett, and Austin Whalen, along with several aunts and uncles including aunt Marcia Anderson. He was preceded in death by his father David Mannikko, step father; Ed Ostola, and an aunt Debbie Radloff.

Honoring Walter's wishes, cremation will take place and private services will take place at a later date.

Inurnment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery, where Military Honors will be accorded by the U.S. Marine Corps.
