Ishpeming- Viola Tatrault age 85 formerly of 605 Washington St., passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming Twp.
Viola was born on October 23, 1922 in Trout Creek, MI, to Lempi (Paju) and Otto Backa. Viola's infant brother Albert died in 1924 followed by her mother two months later. Viola was raised by her father and maternal grandparents, Frederick and Sophia Paju. Viola graduated from Ishpeming High School in 1940. She married Lowell Robert Tatrault on May 9, 1942. She later developed tuberculosis in 1948 and was hospitalized until 1951. While there, Viola became very skilled in the domestic arts. Sewing later became her lifetime vocation. She had her own sewing business but also worked at 'Goldie's Smartwear', 'The Penney Store', and lastly 'The Style Shop' for 25 years. Viola's main focus in life was caring for her husband and children. Viola's husband and children were very blessed to have her.
Viola's hobbies were cooking, reading, sewing and knitting, as well as hunting and spending time at their camp on Silver Lake. In 1963, Viola shot a beautiful 10 point buck at daylight on opening day of deer season. That stands as the earliest buck on record taken at the camp on Silver Lake and will always be remembered by her family.
Survivors include her husband of 66 years: Lowell, 4 children: Pauline (William) Grawey of Ishpeming, Blair R. (Lisa) Tatrault of Stevensville, MI, Joseph L. (Susan Hoffman) Tatrault of Astoria, OR, and Audrey Pettersen of Negaunee, 5 grandchildren: Shawn (Kevin) Hodges of Ishpeming, Renee (Sean) Gaudet of Wesley Chapel, FL, Adrian Tatrault. Eric Pettersen, and Nolan Pettersen, 3 great grandchildren: Chloe Gaudet, Brett & Benjamin Hodges, & special cousin Jerry (Mary) Paju of Negaunee. She also enjoyed special friendships throughout her life with sister in law Shirley Simula and friends Helen Sarvello of Ishpeming and Ellen Linjala of DePere, Wisconsin.
Viola is preceded in death by an infant brother Albert Backa and a great granddaughter Maia Leilani Grawey.
Funeral Services for Viola will take place 4:00pm on Friday, April 18, 2008 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. The family will great friends and relatives on Friday at the funeral home from 2:00 until the time of service at 4:00pm.
