Republic – Viola L. Niemi, age 93 formerly of the Riverview Heights Apt. in Republic passed away on Sunday July 8, 2007 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming while surrounded by her family.
Viola was born February 6, 1914 in Republic, the daughter of the late Matt and Elizabeth (Waskeri) Mattson. She grew up in Republic, graduating from the Republic High School in 1932. Following graduation, she enrolled in a business correspondence course through LaSalle University in Chicago, managed the Republic Farmer's Co-Op and the Manistique Co-op. Viola married Edwin E. Niemi on November 19, 1944. They moved to Warrenton, Oregon in the late 1940's, residing there for a few years and then moved to Wisconsin in the early 1950's. While in Wisconsin she managed the Co-Op store in Saxon, WI. She returned to the Republic area in the mid-1950's, where she resided since. Viola had worked as a seamstress locally at the H.W. Gossard Co., Style Shop, Goldie's and Gatley's where she had also managed the women's department.
Viola will be remembered as a very talented individual, enjoying oil painting, tending her beautiful flower gardens, knitting, crocheting, writing her Memories, and sewing. A favorite pastime was making children's clothing for missions. She shared her talent by teaching a sewing course at the Republic Community Schools. She was very active in the Republic Senior Center and the Golden Age Club.
Survivors include a daughter Jennifer (Darryll) Daniels of Republic; 6 grandchildren – Leah Burke (Patrick-deceased), Lori (Bill) Trudell, Terri (Jeff) DuMoulin, Tammy (Mark) Johnson, Chris Wixtrom, and Heather (Gary Oja) Daniels Oja; 11 great grandchildren – Joeseph Burke, Mary, Matthew, Brian and Sara Trudell, Jordan Wixtrom, Shawna and Jake DuMoulin, Joshua and Zachary Johnson, & Morgan Oja; beloved niece – Nancy Bluse, along with numerous other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Edwin E. Niemi in 1980, along with a daughter and son-in-law – Liz (1996) and Jack (2002) Wixtrom.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Monday July 16, 2007 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. Virginia Eggert to officiate. Internment will take place at the Republic Cemetery and a private resting place.
The family will greet friends and relatives from 1:00pm until the time of services on Monday at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
