Obituary

Victor Severs Reid, 93, long time resident of Honor, MI, and mostrecently a resident of Ishpeming, Mi, passed away on Wednesday, December 19, 2018, in his home surrounded by his loving family while under the care of UP Home Health and Hospice.

Victor was born on November 11, 1925 in Ravenna, MI to the late William and Mary (Severs) Reid. He attended Ravenna school in the class of 1944.

At age 17, Victor enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during WWII. Following his enlistment, Victor was one of the youngest marines to land on Iwo Jima; he continued his service as a member of the occupying forces in Japan until he was honorably discharged and returned home.

Victor spent 20 years as a machine operator for Shaw Box Crane Works in Muskegon, where he was a member of the United Auto Workers Union and he retired in 1975.  Following his retirement, Victor began a new career in the building trades and worked as a carpenter until 1980, when he moved to his beloved Honor, Michigan.

During his time in Honor, Victor worked on a local farm harvesting cherries, apricots and apples.  Victor was a man with a kind and generous spirit, he was always aware of the struggles of the members of his community and he spoke often of distributing fruit, that would have gone to waste, to local families who were experiencing tough times. Victor never would let a member of his community go hungry.

Victor also worked on a vegetable farm with his good friend Walt Harris who preceded him in death.  Following the harvest, Victor would distribute left over vegetables to local families in need.

Victor was an avid fisherman; he loved to tell anyone who would listen about his tricks of the trade. Victor enjoyed teaching the neighborhood kids to fish.  Even though he did not eat the fish they caught, he would

clean them and cook them for the young fishermen. If Victor fished alone, he would clean his catch and give them to a neighbor to enjoy. He would never let them go to waste.

Victor is survived by his children; Mary Ann Reid (Jack) of Michigamme, and James Allen Reid of Champion, grandchildren, Billie Jo (Ted) Krask, Andrew Victor Perry, and Lyndsey Marie (Mike) Rivord. Great grandchildren, Frankie Lynn Lee and Giovanni Victor Krask and Riley Ann Perry

Victor was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary, brothers Wallace, Budd and William and sister Doris Terrien.

Victor was a man of integrity, kindness and spirit.  He lived his life to the fullest and accomplished what he set out to do.  He was kind to people and kind to animals. He believed that we would be better people for not eating meat.  Although he was a vegetarian for 73 years, he never judged the carnivores.  Until the moment of his death, Victor made his own choices; he never feared death and he was determined to meet his maker on his terms - he looked forward to meeting his family on the other side, and he knew that his dog, Captain, would be there to greet him. too.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to U.P. Home Health and Hospice for their assistance during this time.

Cremation will take place at Victor's request. A memorial service to celebrate Victor's life will be determined at a later date.Condolences may be addressed to Victor's family at 23121, Smith Road, Michigamme, MI  49861.
