Ishpeming – Thomas "Tom" William Cornish, age 86, of 430 Oak St. passed away at 3:40AM on Sunday, September 06, 2009 at Bell Hospital.

Thomas was born in Ishpeming, Michigan on November 6, 1922, the son of the late Gordon and Jessie (Skewis) Cornish. Tom graduated from Ishpeming high School in 1940. He honorably served in the U.S. Navy during WW II in the Asiatic Pacific area and is a life member of the VFW Post 4573. Tom retired from the Postal Service after 30 years of service. He is the last of the railway mail clerks in Ishpeming. Tom enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening.

Survivors include his step-son Jerome Falk of Florida and close friend Cheryl Sundberg of Ishpeming. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife: Louise (Pelowski) Cornish, sister: Gertrude Cornish and step-son John Falk.

A military funeral service with the Ishpeming VFW Post 4573 and the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380 will be held at Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming, at 11:00AM on Tuesday, September 15th. Visitation will be held from 10:00AM until the time of service. Interment and military honors will be held at the Ishpeming Cemetery immediately following. A luncheon will be held at the VFW, 310 Bank St. in Ishpeming, following the burial.
