Ishpeming Twp. - Theodore E. "Ted" Olgren, age 83, passed away Friday, May 23, 2008 at the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette.
Ted was born November 9, 1924 in Republic, the son of the late Nels and Alina (Hintsala) Olgren. He was a proud graduate of the Ishpeming-Negaunee-NICE community schools in 1993. He faithfully served our country as a technician, in the United States Army during World War II serving in the European Theatre of Operations and was honorably discharged on December 12, 1946.
Following his service time, Ted lived in the Detroit area working as a truck driver for the teamsters union. He married Lorraine Peters on March 30, 1951. He moved his family back to the Ishpeming area in 1968 and has resided here since. Ted worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company at the Mather B mine and then as a forklift operator at the Tilden mine, retiring in 1988, following 20 years with the company.
Ted was a life member of the Republic VFW, and member of the Ishpeming VFW. Ted was also a member of the Musicians Union enjoying older music and country music. Ted loved writing songs and poetry. He had played the keyboard at area nursing homes and during local parades or community events. Ted enjoyed everyday life in his community.
Survivors include a daughter Diane (Butch) Haglund of Ishpeming, sister: Dorothy (Bob) Worgull of Camp Verde, AZ, brother: Martin Olgren of Negaunee, his former wife: Lorraine Olgren of Ishpeming, 2 grandchildren: Rob Melka of Ishpeming, Michael (Angie) Melka of Pestigo, WI, a great granddaughter: Kayla Melka, step-granddaughter: Lexi Tharp, special niece: Connie (Dennis) Culver of Traverse City, along with several other nieces and nephews, and his cat "Kitty" whom he enjoyed. Ted was preceded in death by his grandson James Melka, brothers: Leonard and Augie Olgren, sisters: Aili Kangas and Judy Heslip, and half-sister Edna Piziali.
The family will greet friends and relatives from 4:00PM until 6:00PM at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 27, 2008. A military honors service will be held at 6:00PM at the Funeral Home following visitation, performed by the Ishpeming VFW and the V.V.A. Chapter #380. Inurnment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
