Ishpeming – Syme H. Niemi, age 96, longtime Ishpeming area resident, went to be with her Savior on June 15, 2018 while a resident at the Marquette Co. Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming.

Syme was born July 7, 1921 to Paul and Gustava (Nyman) Koski on the family homestead in Ewen, MI.  She was a graduate of the Ewen High School, Class of 1939.  In her early years she worked various jobs in the cities, one being at King Seely in Ann Arbor, MI.  On July 17, 1954 she was married to Arvid W. Niemi.  They had no children, but her nieces and nephews were blessed by her abundant love.  Besides being a devoted wife to Arvid, she kept in constant contact with their relatives and friends.  She also was a regular babysitter for family friends.  Syme enjoyed going to camp at Bass Lake.  Syme was a member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church in Ishpeming.

Syme was preceded in death by her husband Arvid in 1994, her parents, her siblings and their spouses – Helen, John (Leah) Koski, Jennie (Tauno) Kallio, Lydia (Arvid) Pyorre, George, Waino, Anna (Arvid) Franti and Elsie (Urho) Hoffstrom, John (Gail) Koski, Sylvia Yunker, Mary (Jim) Haapapuro, Paul Koski, Ralph ( friend Janet) Kallio, Edith (Ron) Weitkum, Bertha Young, Ken Franti, George (Norma) Pyorre, Karen (Tom) Mertle, Richard Hoffstrom, special nephew Mark Kallio, along with some of her nieces and nephews.  She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and a host of brothers and sisters in faith.

Syme's family will greet relatives and friends from 12:00PM – 1:00PM on Monday, June 18, 2018 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming.  Funeral services will follow at 1:00pm on Monday at the funeral home with Roger Kangas to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the Apostolic Lutheran Church, 1700 US Hwy. 41 West, Ishpeming.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Marquette Co. Medical Care Facility, Activities Dept., 200 Saginaw St., Ishpeming, MI 49849.

The family would like extend a special thanks to Dr. Grossman and the entire loving and caring staff at the MCMCF for their excellent care they gave Syme.
