Ishpeming – Steve W. Brewer, age 50, of 1420 Co. Rd. PPR, Ishpeming, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, December 9, 2013 at the Bell Hospital in Ishpeming following an apparent brain aneurysm. Steve was born July 12, 1963 in Ishpeming the son of George W. and Claire E. (Huot) Brewer. Steve grew up south of Ishpeming and was a graduate of the Westwood High School, Class of 1981. He furthered his education at Michigan Technological University (MTU) graduating in 1985 with a degree in mechanical engineering, and later passed the Professional Engineers (P.E.) Exam His work career started in California where he worked for the Naval Ship Systems Engineering Co., and took him to Fond du Lac, WI and Grand Rapids, MI prior to retuning to Ishpeming. For the past 24 years Steve had worked for Cliffs Natural Resources (CCI) currently as Area Manager of Engineering/Reliability at the Tilden and Empire Mines. Steve was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, where he married Bonnie S. Ruokola on June 29, 1996. He had many hobbies and activities including being a member of the Ishpeming Beagle Club, where he enjoyed rabbit hunting. Other hunting activities included Pheasant & Grouse hunting with his English Setter, and Deer Hunting at the Green Hills Camp. He also loved to go Salmon fishing. Steve enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson with his wife Bonnie. He was a member of the E.A.A., Chapter #850 and he loved piloting his Piper Cub plane along with restoring old vehicles including a Willey's Jeep, a 1931 Ford pickup, and had plans to fix up a 1934 Ford. Steve was active with the Boy Scouts of America, Troop #321 in Ishpeming where he had served as Scout Master. Steve will especially be remembered as a great husband and father. Survivors include his wife Bonnie S. Brewer of Ishpeming, 2 sons – Seth and Nathan Brewer both at home in Ishpeming, his mother Claire Brewer of Gwinn, a brother Bill (Lori) Brewer of Ishpeming, 2 half-brothers – David Brewer of FL and George Brewer of TX, his father-in-law and mother-in-law – Peter and Kathy Ruokola of Ishpeming, a sister-in-law – Cindy Kocian, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law – Peter and Shane Ruokola, nieces and nephews – Ciara and Austin Brewer, Peter and Kaden Ruokola, Jared, Ethan & Parker Kocian, a special uncle Dr. Sam Huot along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Steve was preceded in death by his father George Brewer and an aunt Carol Liubakka. The family will greet relatives and friends from 3pm-5pm on Friday, December 13, 2013 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. Funeral services will follow at 5:00pm on Friday with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Inurnment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the services in the church hall. Pallbearers will be Scott Rasmussson, Reid Alderton, Randy Alderton, Brian Nelson, Jim Robson, Dave Niemela, and Tim Hares.
