Ishpeming- Stanley A. Uitto, age 92, longtime Ishpeming resident, passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2024 at UP Health System Bell, while in the loving care of his family and hospital staff.
Stanley was born in Negaunee on July 22, 1931, son of the late Matthew and Lempi (Polkki) Uitto. After graduating from Negaunee High School, he served in the United States Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany with the 10th Mountain Division. He then attended Northern Michigan University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial education and a Master of Arts degree in secondary education. He taught middle school science at Gwinn Area Community Schools, retiring after 31 years. He married the love of his life, Betty (Besola) Uitto, on September 10, 1955.
Stanley was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church where he previously served on their church council, a past Exalted Ruler of the Ishpeming Elks, a member of the Negaunee VFW, and a former member of the Gwinn Education Association and Michigan Education Association. He was a passionate bowler, and was inducted into the Marquette County Bowling Hall of Fame in May of 2023. He was an avid deer hunter and fisherman, and participated in the local Twilight Horseshoe League for many years. He also was a devoted fan of the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Tigers. He was a great carpenter, always doing projects at his own home, and helping family do remodeling at theirs as well.
Stanley is survived by 3 children: Lori (Steven) Boase of Negaunee, Julie (Todd) Dunn of Las Vegas, NV, David Uitto of Ishpeming; 4 grandchildren: Jessica (Jim) Gustitis, Courtney (Michael) Verellen, Rachel (Terry) Harper, Cory (Megan) Dunn; 9 great grandchildren: Ava, Kalli, Brody, Ben, Blake, Henry, Jacob, Redford, Clover; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law: Jean and Eugene Bilkey, Barbara Besola, and Ruth Uitto; his special friend Bill Holm; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty, brothers Donald (Hazel) Uitto and Harvey Uitto, sister Elvi (Sherman) Noldin, brothers-in-law: Melvin (Irma) Besola, Alan (first wife Nancy) Besola, Lee (Gail) Besola.
Following Stanley's wishes, a private graveside service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Bethel Lutheran Church 333 E. Ridge St. Ishpeming, MI 49849 in memory of Stanley.
