Gwinn, MI - Shirley Hiissala-Toliver passed away on July 21, 2017; she was 63-years-old. She was diagnosed with cancer in November 2016.
Shirley was born in Ishpeming, MI on July 11, 1954 to Reino Hiissala and Ella Gillespie-Hiissala. She spent most of her childhood growing up in Suomi Location, a small village just south of Palmer, MI. She attended Negaunee High School. She had many friends growing up there and enjoyed outdoor activities such as water skiing, swimming, and snowmobiling. In recent years Shirley resided in Gwinn with her mother, Ella, preceding her death. She made many friends and aquaintances at the apartment complex where they lived.
Prior to moving back to the U.P., she resided in Alabama for several years where she worked for Walmart Corporation as a District Manager. She moved back to Michigan 6 years ago where she has lived with, and cared for, our mother.
She had many interests including knitting/crocheting, cooking, baking, and camping with family.
Shirley is survived by her son Andy Harju in Marquette, her mother Ella Hiissala in g Gwinn, two sisters Lillian (Mae) Goedert in Marquette and Peggy Parrott in Concord, NC. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.
There is no formal service planned for Shirley, at this time, upon her request. Her wishes were for a graveside service with family present. She will be laid to rest in the Gwinn Cemetery, next to her beloved sister Dixie, who passed away in December 2016.
Memorials can be made to U.P. Hospice and Home Health, 1125 W. Ridge Street, Marquette, MI 49855, in honor of Shirley's life.
