Ishpeming- Shirley Marion Mattson, age 91 longtime Ishpeming resident passed away Monday, January 04, 2016 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where she had been a resident since June 2013.
Shirley was born January 2, 1925 in Ishpeming to Oscar N. & Ebba (Conradsen) Oie. She graduated from Ishpeming High School, class of 1942. Shirley worked 2 years in Detroit and 1 year in Chicago before coming back to Ishpeming after World War II ended. She began working as a secretary for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company and stayed there 30 years, retiring in 1975.
Shirley married John T. "Jack" Mattson of Negaunee in 1951 and was married for 54 years; Jack preceded her in death in 2006. They made their home on Mather Avenue in Ishpeming. They enjoyed 17 winters in Destin Florida. They also enjoyed their camp at Lake Arflin for several years. In 2007, she visited England, Scotland and Ireland with her sister Betty. Shirley was a life member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ishpeming and a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Destin, FL during several winters.
Shirley, known as "Tody" by her nieces and nephews is survived by 4 nieces: Bryn (Michael) Smith, Jolie (Peter) Dzanbozoff, Heidi (Floyd) Johns, ad Candy Jackson, 2 nephews Kevin (Becky) Bannon and Todd Weingartner, sister in law Nancy Peterson of Connecticut, a cousin Marilyn Johnson, along with numerous great nieces and great nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Jack Mattson 2006, 2 sisters: Betty Bannon and Merle Weingartner and a nephew Tain Bannon
Shirley's family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00am until 11:00am on Thursday January 7, 2016 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Ishpeming where a memorial service will be held at 11:00 am with Rev. Kenneth Lahners officiating.
A luncheon will be held in the church fellowship hall following the service.
Memorial considerations may be directed to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Shirley's memory.
