Ishpeming – Sherwood L. Morcom, age 82, of 417 Salisbury St., Ishpeming passed away on Friday October 6, 2017 at his home. He had been in the loving care of his family, UP Home Health and Hospice and special caregivers Carol, Sheena and Randi.
Sherwood was born March 4, 1935 in Ishpeming (Frenchtown Location) the son of the late Roy G. and Viola (Lawrence) Morcom. Sherwood grew up in Salisbury Location and was a lifelong Ishpeming resident. Sherwood's first job was at the Chevrolet Garage in Ishpeming followed by working for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad cleaning the "400". Sherwood went on to work as an electrician for the City of Negaunee then at CCI for 9 ½ years mainly at the Pioneer Pellet Plant prior to returning to the City of Negaunee where he finished out his career as an electrician / lineman. Sherwood had also served in the Michigan National Guard for 6 years.
Sherwood will be remembered as a hard worker and "Jack of all trades" by his family and friends. He loved to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed and he truly loved any construction project. Music was a lifelong passion of his especially Country and Western music along with playing the guitar and piano. His guitar playing included in various bands which would go locally to area nursing homes and the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans. Sherwood had been active in the area fast-pitch softball leagues as a pitcher. He also enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing, and playing cribbage in the Ishpeming Cribbage League and the Monday Night Negaunee League.
Survivors include his wife of the past 63 years Mary (nee Nelson) Morcom of Ishpeming, 4 children – Nancy Loven of Ishpeming, Larry (June) Morcom of Ishpeming, Sherwood "Sam" (Carol) Morcom of National Mine and Julie (Bart) Boule of Ishpeming, a sister Lois Goethe of Ishpeming, 9 grandchildren – Sheri, Donald, Brian, Brad, Kasey, Kelly, Sheena, Brandon and Randi, 15 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 4 until 6 PM on Monday, October 9, 2017 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 6:00 PM with the Rev. Warren Geier to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
