Laurel, MD- Ruth K. Johnson, age 89, longtime Republic resident, passed away Monday July 28, 2014 in Laurel, Maryland.
Ruth Karina Koski was born February 25, 1925 in Hancock, MI to Charles & Tyyne (Kauppila) Koski. When she was a child, Ruth's family moved to Republic, MI where Ruth would live the majority of her life and raise her family. She was a graduate of Republic High School.
Ruth married Harry L. Johnson on June 22, 1946. Ruth contracted polio not long after they were married and lived the rest of her life as a paraplegic. She was an inspiration to many as she persevered through this trial and went on to raise four children, keep an immaculate home, and work in several capacities from a running the family fruit and vegetable stand to writing for the newspaper and acting as dispatcher for the Republic Township volunteer ambulance and fire services. Ruth also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and sewing for her family. She created some beautiful treasured heirlooms. The family also remembers how she loved to spoil them with bakery and their favorite meals during visits to her home. Ruth was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Republic.
Ruth is survived by her four children: Christine Morris of Peoria, IL, Robin (Xiao) Johnson of Quinton, VA, Lorin (Eunice) Johnson of Laurel, MD and Regin (Kelly) Johnson of Valparaiso, IN, Five grandchildren: Abigael, Emma, Caleb, Noah of Valparaiso, IN and Hadessah of Quinton, VA. A brother, Sidney (Joan) Koski of Republic, and several nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Harry Johnson, her parents, sister Elaine Wuorenmaa, infant sister Judith and brothers Stuart, Carl and Douglas Koski.
Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Friday, August 8, 2014, at Bethany Lutheran Church with Rev. Kevin Kaiser, officiating. Interment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens in Negaunee Twp.
Ruth's family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, August 8, 2014 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic, 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM, just prior to the funeral services.
