Obituary

Ishpeming – Ruth M. Fredin, age 87, of 111 Bluff St. #210, Ishpeming passed away on Friday May 6, 2016 at the Marquette Co. Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming with her family at her side.

Ruth was born July 16, 1928 in Sault Ste. Marie, MI the daughter of the late Matt & Tyne (Warlin) Hamari. Ruth moved to this area with her parents in her childhood, first to Negaunee, then North of the Dead River Basin and finally to North Lake Location. Ruth worked waitressing at local restaurants including the BonTon in Marquette, Sexton's and Gurchinoff's in Negaunee. She married Alfred "Merf" Fredin on Aug 16, 1952 and they moved to Waukegan, IL in late 1950's. While in Waukegan, Ruth had worked for the Hallmark Card Co. and at the Lake Forest Oasis. They returned to Ishpeming in 1963 and Ruth went back to waitressing this time at the American Café. Ruth then became a Nurses Aid working at the Acocks Facility and later at Bell Hospital in Ishpeming where she had retired from.

Ruth was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church where she had been active in her younger years. She loved to be around people and took part in the many activities and gatherings at the High Rise where she was living. Ruth loved playing BINGO and an occasional trip to the casino. She had also been involved with the Bell Auxiliary.

Survivors include four children – Bruce (Delight) Hill of Gwinn, Richard (Fred Noel) Fredin of Pittsburgh, PA, Carla (Robert) Perala of Ishpeming and David (Kim) Fredin of Marquette, 5 grandchildren – John Hill, Trisha (Lorin) Riutta, Bradley Perala, Zachary (Alyssa) Fredin and Jennifer Fredin, 9 great grandchildren, brothers – Ronald (Millie) Hamari and Donald (Judy) Hamari, sisters – Nancy Lepisto of Boynton Beach, FL, and Darlene (Larry) Arsenault of Champion, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband – Alfred "Merf" Fredin in 1997, grandchildren Jodi Ball and Brian Perala, infant brother Leo Hamari and sister Eleanor Robinson.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00noon on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery. The Fredin family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00am until 12:00noon on Wednesday at the Bethel Lutheran Church. A luncheon will follow the services in the church hall.
