Ishpeming - Roy Harold Winnen, of 1930 Southwood Dr., passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, December 04, 2010 at the age of 83 in the loving care of his family and Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice.
Roy was born on July 3, 1927 in Calumet, Michigan the son of the late Joseph and Emma (Blom) Winnen. He graduated from Calumet High School, attended Michigan Tech and graduated from Wayne State University in Detroit with a Mechanical Engineering degree. Roy served his country with the Merchant Marines.
Roy worked on the Great Lakes iron ore boats, at Ford Motor Company in Detroit, and Allas Chambers in Milwaukee. He moved to the Ishpeming area in 1956 where he started a career with the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, working at Eagle Mills, pioneering the ore pelletizing process. He continued his career at the Humboldt Mine, Republic Mine, and retired in 1986 as Assistant General Mine Manager at the Tilden Mine. In retirement he served on the Ishpeming Credit Union Board of Directors.
As a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Ishpeming, Roy served on the Vestry. He was a man of faith who enjoyed gardening, woodworking, hunting, reading, spending time with his grandchildren and at his Lake Beaufort cottage, along with playing pinochle, traveling and visiting numerous islands of the Great Lakes.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years Zita (Verbanac) Winnen, 3 sons – Joseph Winnen of Gladstone, Mark (Susan Saine) Winnen of Denver, CO, Roy (Debbie) Winnen of Appleton, WI, 2 daughters - Susan (Rob McIvor) Grant of Marquette, Marion (Jeffrey) Johnson of Ishpeming, grandchildren – Christopher Winnen, Courtney (David) Woosencraft, Jaclyn and Molly Johnson, Lauren and Eric Winnen, Camille and Cameron Grant, Luke and Bryce Winnen, great grandchildren - Maria and Connor Woosencraft., along with numerous nieces and nephews including special nephews Gary, David and Michael Winnen. He is preceded in death by sisters - Gertrude Michaelson, Gladys Marcoux, Arbutus Winnen, Ruth Mackey, and brother - Bob, George, Stanley, and Russell Winnen.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00am – 1:00pm on Tuesday December 7, 2010 at the Grace Episcopal Church in Ishpeming. A memorial service will follow at 1:00pm on Tuesday with Rev. Manuel Padilla to officiate. Inurnment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
