Ishpeming – Roy F. Simula, age 82, of 850 N. Pine St. Ishpeming passed away on Monday December 24, 2007 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette where he had resided for the past 14 months.
Roy was born July 25, 1925 in Mohawk, MI the son of the late Arthur and Josephine (Laituri) Simula. He resided in the Copper Country until the late 1930's when he moved to Ishpeming with his family. Roy served in the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. Roy went on to work for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. for 39 years, first working underground at the Mather A and Mather B mines, then in open pit mining mainly at the Republic Mine.
Roy enjoyed going on family fishing outings in his earlier years. He was an avid sports fan of the Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Lions, and in his later years enjoyed golfing at the Wawonowin Country Club. Roy always enjoyed a good game of cards and any trivia games. He was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming.
Roy is survived by the love of his life, Sigrid (Walimaa) Simula whom he had been married to for 57 years; a son Terry (Janet) Simula of Marquette and a daughter Tina (Donald) Weiland of Marquette: along with 2 nieces and 4 nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 infant sisters – Robertine and Dorothy Simula, a sister – Ruth Korpi and 2 brothers – Earl Simula and Arthur Simula Jr.
A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00pm on Friday December 28, 2007 in the Chapel at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Inurnment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens in Negaunee Twp. The family will greet friends from 3:00pm until the time of services at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.
