Ishpeming- Rocco Victor "Apples" Carello, age 92 of Johnson St. Ishpeming, passed away at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans on Tuesday November 1, 2016.
Rocco was born September 18, 1924 in Ishpeming to Vito and Concetta (Gagliardi) Carello. He attended Ishpeming High School. Rocco served in WWII as a Rifleman with Company I of the 15th Infantry Division of the United States Army. He fought in the North African , Sicilian, and Italian campaigns. For his service Rocco was awarded the following: Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII, Combat Infantryman Badge, European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and the Bronze Star Medal. Rocco worked as a heavy equipment operator for the City of Ishpeming, Department of Public Works. He retired in 1987 after working 32 years.
Rocco attended St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and St. Joseph Catholic Church. He hunted in the past and still enjoyed fishing. He liked to spend summers camping at the AMVETS. He was a member and previously served as Provost Marshall. Rocco especially enjoyed cooking for family and friends, his spaghetti and meatballs, were a constantly requested favorite among those who had eaten them. Rocco's company will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Rocco is survived by 4 children: Vito (Jane) Carello Sr. of Ishpeming, Geraldine (Gerald Kippola) Carello of Ishpeming, Rocco V. (Donna) Carello Jr. of Marquette and David (Elaine) Carello of Ishpeming, longtime friend and companion Lois Durand. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren: Vito (Linda) Carello Jr., Dominic Carello, Anthony (Kristi) Carello, Hannah (Matt) Wentzel, Andrea Carello, Aaron (Amanda) Kippola , Leah (Eric) Kippola-Friske, Rocco (Deborah) Carello Jr., Tommy (Michelle) Carello, Pam (Sonni) Vormberge, David Carello Jr., James Carello and Jesse (Carrie) Carello, along with numerous great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Rocco was preceded in death by his parents and wife Joan Carello, sisters: Florence Carello, Lena Peterson, Rose LaBeau, and a brother Dominic Carello.
Rocco's family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, November 5, 2016 from 12 noon-2:00pm at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming where a memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm with Fr. Dan Moll officiating.
Military honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380.
