Ishpeming – Robert Surrell, age 87, of 2100 Deer Lake Ave., Ishpeming, passed away on Wednesday January 2, 2008 at Marquette General Hospital where he been a patient for the past 3 weeks.
Robert was born April 24, 1920 in Ishpeming to Douglas & Marie (Lyons) Surrell. Bob served his country in the United States Army from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945. He served at the Battle of Normandy in Northern France and received many decoration and citation which included the European African Middle Eastern Theater &, Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Ribbons, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal.
Bob married Marie (Nault) on February 5, 1946. He worked as a salesman for the Cohodas Brothers wholesale produce company from June 1940 to May 1984. Bob was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming and the Ishpeming V.F.W. Post 4573.
Bob is survived by 2 children: Julie (John) Pesola of Three Lakes and Terry (Susan) Surrell of Ishpeming, 3 grandchildren: Brian (Christy) Pesola of Shelby Twp, MI, Christopher (Crystal) Pesola of Sterling Heights, MI and Heather (Michael) Nelson of Ishpeming, 3 great grandchildren who were the light of his life: Ethan & Amanda Pesola and Nathen Nelson, several cousins including a special cousin John (Marie) Lyons, along with many good friends and neighbors. Bob was preceded in death by his wife Marie in 1993.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 1:30pm Saturday, January 4, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Greg Heikkala officiating. Burial will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Friends may call St. Joseph Catholic Church on Saturday from 11:30am-1:30pm where the Ishpeming V.F.W. will conduct a memorial service at 12:00 noon.
