Obituary

Ely Twp.- Robert “Otto” Luoma, age 81, lifelong area resident, passed away on Thursday May 21, 2026 at his home, while in the loving care of his family, and UP Home Health and Hospice.

Otto was born on February 6, 1945, son of the late Uuno and Alice (Wiljanen) Luoma. He grew up in the Champion area and was a graduate of Champion High School, class of 1963. Otto married his wife of 60 years, Juanita “Rogie” Currie on February 19, 1966. He worked at Cleveland Cliffs for 42 years, a career that spanned across the Republic, Mather B, Empire, and Tilden mines.

Otto was a member of the Lion’s club, a former member of the Wawonowin Country Club where he earned himself a hole-in-one. He enjoyed hunting, watching the birds, cheering on the Tigers and Lions, watching NASCAR, and will be remembered for his love of any animal that came through his doors. He especially loved his cats, Buffy, Bruno, Cuddles, and all the others he cared for and loved throughout the years.

Otto is survived by his wife: Juanita “Rogie” Luoma, daughter: Staci (Ralph Uhl) Mannila, brother-in-law: Dan (Teresa) Currie, 3 grandchildren: Cara Anderson, Travis Bressette, Kylee (Paul Polkinghorne) Bressette, 6 great grandchildren: Ellie, Esme, Oliver, Rebekah, Rosaleigh, and Henry, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter: Becky Bressette, siblings: Bernie and Norman Luoma, goddaughter: Samantha “Elizabeth” Bonovich, along with several brothers and sisters-in-law.

Otto’s family will greet relatives and friends on Wednesday May 27, 2026 at the Bjork and Zhulkie Funeral Home from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM. Food will be served throughout.
