Republic, MI- Robert L. "Bob" Mattson, 84, former Republic resident passed away on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee.

Robert was born in Republic, Michigan on July 20, 1938, a son of the late Jalmer and Sylvia (Suomi) Mattson. Bob graduated from Republic High School, Class of 1956.

Bob was an excellent basketball and baseball player in his youth and signed a professional contract with the Boston Red Sox farm team. Bob played on the Shooting Stars basketball team. He also started and coached Little League in Republic.

Bob served his country in the US Army. Following his discharge Bob returned home to Republic where he worked for CCI for many years.

He is survived by a daughter, Lori (Scott) Gauthier, 2 grandchildren; Travis (Amanda) Gauthier, and Emily Gauthier, 2 great grandsons; Larkin and Augustin, a brother Raymond (Dolores) Mattson, special nieces, and nephews; Rochelle (Aaron) Wixtrom, and Ray (Brenda) Mattson, along with many other nieces and nephews, special friend Judy Hatch and brother-in-law Peter Kuzma. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, wife Kareena Mattson, sister Rachel Kuzma and special friend Mary Ann Saless.

Honoring Bob's wishes a private graveside service will be held at the Republic Township Cemetery.
