Republic, MI- Robert D. "Bob" Lahtela, age 76, of 5430 Honey Bee Lane Republic, passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at UP Health System Marquette from a sudden illness.
Robert was born in Ishpeming on April 21, 1942, a son of the late Selda (Kerkela) and Donald Lahtela. He attended Republic High School and graduated with the class of 1960.
Bob worked for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., for 30 years working at the Republic, Tilden and Empire Mines, He retired in 1995 from the Empire Mine as an Electronic Repairman. He enjoyed nearly 24 years of good retirement.
Bob was a past member of the Moose Country Snowmobile Club and the Sportsman's and Rabbit Clubs of Republic. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed spending time at deer camp. He also liked fishing especially at the annual fishing derby with his son and grandchildren in which they won many prizes. In September 2017, he achieved a bucket list item by catching a large blue marlin in Cabo, Mexico with his wife and daughter. Bob enjoyed traveling with his wife and daughter throughout the United States and to many other countries as well, travel included many cruises.
Bob is survived by his wife Peggy (Oien) Lahtela whom he was united in marriage on June 12, 1965, 2 children: Beth Lahtela of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Brian (Grace) Lahtela of Green Bay, WI, 3 grandchildren: Dylan, Paige, Taylor Lahtela along with many nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters: Dolores Carriere, and Audrey Parkkonen, a brother Ronald Lahtela, and infant son Kent.
Bob's family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00-11:00 am on Monday March 11, 2019 at St. Augustine Catholic Church where a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM with Fr. Dan Moll officiating.
A luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall.
