Obituary

Marquette – Richard William Schauland, age 94, of 2393 Center St., Marquette, closed his eyes on May 19, 2015, and opened them in Heaven, where he was welcomed by the Lord Jesus Christ whom he loved and served.

Richard was born June 21,1920 in Nemadji, MN to August Charles and Ann Marie (Madsen) Schauland. The family farmed near Nemadji. Richard was the sixth child of a family of eight, and graduated from high school at Barnum, MN. In 1944 Richard enlisted in the United States Navy, and served in the Pacific during WWII. After his honorable discharge, he met and married Gladys J. Lunde in June of 1946, they lived in Barnum, and Rick began a career with the Soo Line Railroad. Four sons and a daughter, Ronald, Kenneth, Mark, Deborah, and Marvin were born to them.

In 1962 they moved to Marquette where he was the Roadmaster on the Soo Line Railroad, retiring July 1980. Richard accepted the Lord as his Saviour, and served Him faithfully over the years. He and his wife Gladys have been active members of Hope Free Lutheran Church in Ishpeming MI.

Two brothers, Herman and Charles, four sisters, Katherine, Mildred, Marie, Margaret, and his grandson Luke, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Gladys Schauland of Marquette; his children and their spouses, Ronald (Jeanne) Schauland of Appleton, Kenneth (Sue) Schauland of Marquette, Mark (Margie) Schauland of Cody, WY, Deborah (Duane) Wyse of Kingsley, MI and Marvin (Deborah) Schauland of Appleton, WI; his sister Mabel Schauland of Duluth, MN, 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren whom he greatly loved.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 9:00am – 11:00am on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at the Hope Free Lutheran Church, 795 North Lake Dr., Ishpeming. Funeral services will follow at 11:00am on Wednesday with the Rev. Micah Hjermstad to officiate. A luncheon will follow in the church hall. Interment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens, where military honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380. Pallbearers will be grandsons – Chuck Schauland, Drew Wyse, Tom Schauland and Nathan Schauland, along with friends Guy Murray and Earl Langness.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Rick can be made to
the Gideons or the Association Free Lutheran World Missions.
