Ishpeming - Richard F. Kallioinen, Sr., age 91, of 100 New York St. Ishpeming, passed on to his eternal reward on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at his home in Ishpeming.
Richard was born in Negaunee, on December 13, 1928, a son of the late Rauha (Polkki) and Frank Kallioinen. He was raised in Negaunee and was a graduate of Negaunee High School, Class of 1947. He was proud to serve his country in the U.S. Army in the MASH Unit during the Korean War. Five days before leaving for Korea for about a year, he married his sweetheart, Ruby Jean Treloar, on April 18, 1951. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Richard returned to this area where he and Jean raised their six children together in Ishpeming and enjoyed 44 years of loving marriage prior to Jean's passing in 1995. In 1997, Richard married Judith French, with whom he enjoyed 23 wonderful years of marriage.
Richard's working career was spent with the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. as a data clerk starting at the old Tilden Mine. He then worked at the Ohio Mine, Humboldt Mine, Pioneer Pellet Plant and retired in 1982 from the current Tilden Mine. Richard also enjoyed working in the Kallioinen Scrap Metal Recycling Business for many years. He enjoyed people, and was loyal in his friendships, corresponding faithfully with many over the years via letters and phone calls.
Richard was an active member of the Calvary Church of Negaunee and was dedicated to the Apostolic doctrine. He enjoyed singing specials, including The Holy Ghost Will Set Your Feet A-Dancing , and was very faithful in his attendance to church. He also had an extensive collection of license plates hanging on the walls of his garage and enjoyed bartering and trading in antiques and other items. He passionately wrote editorials in the Mining Journal and enjoyed brook trout fishing in his younger years. Richard was very proud of his Finnish heritage and kept a constant supply of viili on hand.
Survivors include his wife of the past 23 years Judith L. (French) Kallioinen of Ishpeming; his children - Darlene J. (Dennis) Spencer of Negaunee; Richard F. (Pamela) Kallioinen Jr., of Negaunee; Larry A. (Lois) Kallioinen of Negaunee; Karen K. (Gerald) Kinney of Negaunee; Peter R. (Laurene) Kallioinen of Traverse City; Kristine K. (David) Rivord of Rhinelander, WI; David W. (Lynn) Kauzlaric of Mountain, WI; Kevin K. (Elyse) Kauzlaric of Chicago, IL.; 22 grandchildren; 50 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson; numerous nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law - Patricia Rogers, Dorothy Ross, Roger French, Delores Jacovich, Joan French, Rita Stoveken, Susie Braun and Abe French. Richard was preceded by his first wife Jean in 1995; son Mark Edward Kallioinen in 1988; sister Elaine (Leonard) Benson; brothers-in-law, Edgar Treloar, Bruce Treloar, Roger Treloar, James Treloar, Paul French, Francis French; and sister-in-law Marie Joerres.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 14, 2020 at the Calvary Church of Negaunee, preceded by a viewing from 11:30-1:00 p.m. Pastor E. R. Crider will officiate. Military honors will be accorded by the U.P. Funeral Honors Team. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Richard's grandsons - Timothy Kinney, Luke Kallioinen, Andrew Kallioinen, John Kinney, Eric Rivord, Andrew Kauzlaric.
