Diorite Loc. – Reino W. "Putty" Lassila, age 87, former Diorite Location resident passed away at 4:45pm Thursday June 17, 2010 at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming Twp. while under the loving care of the Lake Superior Hospice.
Reino was born July 16, 1922 in Ishpeming the son of the late John W. and Maria (Rivasoja) Lassila. He graduated from Ishpeming High School, June 1941. Reino served in the United States Army during World War II, having seen action in the Air Offensive in Japan, as a member of the 459th Bombardment Squadron. Upon his return from the service in 1946 he became employed as a home delivery route man by Northern Dairy of Ishpeming and Bancroft Dairy of Marquette. "Putty" then became a bus driver for the NICE school district, where he worked until his retirement. He was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church and the Ishpeming V.F.W., Martin J. Lassila Post #4573 where he enjoyed visiting with his friends at the Post.
Reino enjoyed fishing, league horseshoe pitching for the 41 Club, and playing cards with his relatives and friends. Putty and his wife Nannie had a special close relationship with nieces Diane and Sandy and the girls pet poodle Buttons.
Reino was preceded in death by the love of his life Lorraine (Tuomi) Lassila in 1996, brothers Martin, killed in World War II, William and sisters Elizabeth Pascoe and Kareena DeCaire; brothers-in-law Richard Pascoe, Ted Tuomi; sisters-in-law Alice Mattila, and Darlene Saari; and nephew Richard Pascoe Jr. Reino is survived by his brother-in-law Mark DeCaire; sisters-in-law Marcy (Donald) Rankinen and Eileen Tuomi, nieces Betsy (Dennis) Knight, Diane (Steve) Anderson, Sandra (Michael) Doud, Lisa (David) Royce; nephews Thomas (Janet Harper) Pascoe, John Pascoe, William Mattila, Alan (Judy) Mattila, Scott (Stacey) Saari, Duane (Kasey) Saari and other related family members.
The family will greet friends from 12:00noon-1:00PM on Monday June 21, 2010 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. Memorial services will be held at 1:00PM on Monday at the Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Inurnment will take place at the Republic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church.
