Ishpeming – Rachel I. Marra, age 92, longtime Ishpeming resident passed away on Wednesday July 6, 2011 at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee where she had resided since May of 2010.
Rachel was born September 3, 1918 in Negaunee, MI the daughter of the late Matt and Alma (Luoma) Siik. Rachel grew up in Negaunee and was a graduate of the Negaunee High School, Class of 1936. She married Dominic Marra on September 28, 1940 at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ishpeming, and together they raised two sons. She worked for the F.W. Woolworth Co. as a sales clerk at the Ishpeming store for many years and did tax preparation work for H & R Block.
Rachel was a member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, where she had been active with various church activities in her younger years. She was a lifetime member of the Lady Elks, and a member of the Paisano Club. Rachel was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening, picking berries, playing BINGO, and watching Detroit Tiger Baseball.
Survivors include a son John Marra of Menasha, WI, 3 grandchildren – Leslie (Jeff) Fenton of Glenview, IL, Jason Marra of Appleton, WI, and Jennie (Bret) Noffke of Combined Locks, WI, 5 great grandchildren – Jordan Paalman and Caden Noffke of Combines Locks, WI, Spencer Marra of Kaukauna, WI, Sam Fenton and Sara Fenton of Glenview, IL, a brother-in-law Louis (Alice Haapala) Marra of Ishpeming, along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Dominic Marra in 1985, to whom she had been married to for 45 years, a son David Marra in 1990, a daughter-in-law Sharon (LaForge) Mara in 1993, a grandson Jesse Marra in 2010, three brothers – Roy, Carl and John Siik, and two sisters Ruth Lenick and Elna Godeski.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 9:30am until 11:00am on Tuesday July 12, 2011 at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ishpeming. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am on Tuesday July 12, 2011 at St. John's Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Greg Heikkala to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the services in the K-D Hall at the church.
