National Mine, MI - Philip M. Hill, age 95, a longtime resident of National Mine, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, April 5, 2025.

Phil was born on September 17, 1929, in National Mine, Michigan, to the late Gust and Ida J. (Aho) Hill. He spent his childhood in National Mine, beginning school in 1934 and graduating sixth in his class of 18 from National Mine High School in 1947. After graduation, he worked at Elson's Bottling Co. and later in the payroll department at Cleveland Cliffs.

In January 1951, Phil was drafted into the United States Army, serving stateside until his honorable discharge in January 1953. That fall, he enrolled in Pharmacy School at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1957. Phil then worked locally at Johnson's Drug Store from 1957 to 1959.

In January 1961, Phil began a 32-year career with Abbott Laboratories in the Chicago area, specializing in product development. In 1971, he was assigned to Puerto Rico, where he led the Pharmaceutical Division and made more than 70 trips to oversee operations. He retired in March 1993.

While working at Abbott, Phil met fellow "Yooper" Anna Mae Kumpula/Vikre. They married on March 9, 1974. After retirement, Phil and Anna returned to the U.P., building a home on the Hill family homestead in National Mine. Together, they enjoyed many trips across the country and abroad. Phil was also a proud member of the American Legion Greenwood Post 114.

Phil is survived by his sister, Leetha Irish of National Mine; nieces and nephews: Keith (Janice) Irish, Diane (Ted) Houseman, and Scott (Tammy) Irish; great-nieces and nephews: Darren Irish, Stephanie Kirchoff, Justin Houseman, Jennifer Irish, and Daniel Irish; and great-great-niece and nephew, Abagail Lake and Everett Philip Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Anna, in 2011.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 11, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home, with a memorial service to follow at 12:00 p.m. officiated by Rev. Jim Duehring. A luncheon will be held following the service at Faith Lutheran Church.
