Ishpeming - Peter J. Arseneault, age 79, of 425 Fisher St. Marquette, passed away at 12:30 PM, Friday, February 13th, 2009 at the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he had resided since April of 2005.
Peter was born in Ishpeming on July 8, 1929, the son of the late Oscar and Cordelia (LaJoie) Arsenault. Peter graduated from Ishpeming High School and received a Master's Degree from Northern Michigan University. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in April of 1948. Peter was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a former member of St Pius X Catholic Church.
Peter was a very active member of the Ishpeming VFW where he served as Post Commander. He worked at Lindberg and Sons from 1976 until he retired in 1990. Peter worked in Vocational Rehab for the state of Michigan until 1976, and before that he taught printing to the disabled at the Michigan Rehab Institute in Pine Lake near Kalamazoo. In 1968, he worked in Nepal, setting up printing presses and teaching printing, and before that he was a teacher at C. L. Phelps. Peter enjoyed playing cribbage, deer hunting, and trout fishing in Canada.
Survivors include his wife Lois (DeCaire) Arseneault of Ishpeming, son: Steve (Kathy Jo Lampi) Arseneault of Ishpeming, daughter: Patrice (C. Patrick Kennedy) Arseneault of Edina, MN, step-son John (Heidi) Heikkila of Ishpeming, sister: Elaine Keto of Gwinn, brothers: Phillip Arseneau of TN, Pius (Agnes) Arseneau of Ishpeming, 4 grandchildren: Alannah Arseneault, Alexander Kennedy, Stephanie Heikkila, and Natalie Heikkila along with numerous nieces and nephews. Peter was preceded in death by his first wife Edna (Lindberg), four brothers: Peter, Paul, Patrick, and Paschal "Pershal," and a sister Ethel Riberdy.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming on Monday, February 16, 2009 at 11:00AM with Rev. Fr. James Challancin officiating. The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #380 held a military honors presentation. Interment took place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers were members of the Ishpeming VFW Post #4573.
