Ishpeming - Peter M. Nurmela, 78, of 773 Wabash St. Ishpeming, passed away at 7:25 PM, Tuesday, February 27th, 2007 peacefully at Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming.
Mr. Nurmela was born in Ishpeming, Michigan on March 12, 1928, the son of the late Eino and Emma (Hutula) Nurmela. Pete graduated from L'Anse High School in 1948 and attended barber school in Detroit.
Pete was self employed barber at Peter's Barber Shop in Ishpeming, for 46 years retiring in 1998. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Ishpeming Elks Lodge #447, and the Negaunee Rod & Gun Club. Pete also was a Past Ishpeming School Board Member and Past President of the local barber's union. Pete enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood working and spending time at camp.
Pete is survived by his wife of 56 years Gladys (Nopola) Nurmela, Daughter, Cathy Nurmela of Chicago, IL. Sons David (Betsy) Nurmela of Negaunee, MI, Steven (Deanna) Nurmela of Champion, MI, Don (Marsha) Nurmela of Kingsford, MI, Jim (Beverly) Nurmela of Upper Darby, PA. He is also survived by 11 Grandchildren, 6 Great Grandchildren and a Sister Dorothy Seppanen of Michigamme, MI and nieces and nephews. Pete was preceded in death by an infant brother, and a brother Roland Nurmela.
Memorial Service will be held at 2:00P.M. Saturday, March 3, 2007 at the Bethel Lutheran Church, Ishpeming, with Rev. Lauri O. Maki officiating.
The family will greet friends and relatives on Saturday at the Bethel Lutheran Church from 1:00p.m. until the time of service at 2:00p.m.
