Obituary

ISHPEMING, MI – Patricia A. LaFreniere, age 96, of Ishpeming, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 23, 2026, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming.

Patricia was born on May 21, 1930, in Ishpeming, MI, the daughter of Patrick and Verna (Oikari) Lyons. Raised in Ishpeming, she was one of the original Deer Lakers. Growing up during a time when hard work and resourcefulness were a way of life, Patricia developed a practical, determined nature that stayed with her throughout her life. She attended grammar school at St. John's Catholic School and graduated from Ishpeming High School with the Class of 1948.

While in high school, Patricia met her future husband and sweetheart, Paul B. LaFreniere. The two were married at St. John's Catholic Church in 1948, shortly after graduation, and began building a life together centered on family. Patricia devoted herself to being a loving wife, mother, and homemaker, creating a home where family, friends, and neighbors always felt welcome.

Kind, thoughtful, and caring are just a few of the words that describe Patricia. She had a special way of making people feel heard and cared for, and that kindness extended well beyond her own family. Her children's friends were always welcome in her home, which became a gathering place for neighborhood kids. Patricia was someone they could turn to when they needed a listening ear, a comforting word, or a little advice. She was always willing to take the time to listen and offer support, making others feel that they mattered. Her caring nature left a lasting impression on the many people fortunate enough to know her.

Patricia found some of her greatest joys in the simple, meaningful things in life, especially gardening and sewing, two passions she cherished. She took pride in her gardening and enjoyed the time and care it took to make things grow. Sewing was another favorite, allowing her to put her resourcefulness and creativity to good use. Whether tending to her garden or working on a sewing project, Patricia found satisfaction in creating something with her own hands.

She was also a wonderful cook, known for making an amazing chicken dinner, and sharing good food was another way she showed her love for others. Patricia enjoyed fishing, spending time on the Dead River Basin, and picking blueberries each season. When she was younger, she was active and enjoyed walking, often covering three miles a day on her route through Al Quaal and the Ishpeming cemetery. She also had a special place in her heart for animals, particularly cats and dogs.

A proud and determined Finnish woman, Patricia could certainly be stubborn when she needed to be, but those who knew her best understood that her strong will was part of what made her who she was. She lived a life marked by hard work, quiet generosity, and devotion to the people she loved. Through her welcoming home, thoughtful advice, home-cooked meals, sewing, and gardening, Patricia gave of herself in countless ways. Her legacy will live on in the family she raised and in the many lives she touched with her kindness.

Patricia was a longtime member of the St. Pius Church Ladies Guild before later joining the Ladies Guild at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. She was also a member of the church sewing groups.

Patricia is survived by her children, Gregory (Kristine) LaFreniere, Patricia (Richard) Harvala, and Jon (Eleanor) LaFreniere; nine grandchildren, Heather (Michael Norman) LaFreniere, Timothy (Kristina) LaFreniere, Jennifer (Richard) Lewis, Justin (Julie) Harvala, Chantelle LaFreniere, Holly (Kyle) Marenger, Aimee Wangberg, Meggin (Todd) Johnson, and Matthew (Bonnie) Koski; fourteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Patrick and Verna Lyons; her husband, Paul LaFreniere; her daughter, Mary Koski; her brothers, Charles Lyons and James Lyons; and her sister, Virginia Holmgren.

Patricia’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Marquette County Medical Care Facility for their compassion and kindness.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming next summer. Details will be forthcoming.

Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
