Obituary

Marquette – Oliver Voegtline, age 82, of 1530 W. Ridge St. Apt #42, Marquette passed away on Sunday, August 14, 2016 at his home in Marquette. He was in the loving care of his family and the Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice at the time of his death.

Oliver was born in Republic, Michigan on October 20, 1933 to the late Spalding and Irene Voegtline. He was a graduate of Republic High School, Class of 1951. Oliver then joined the Michigan Army National Guard in Ishpeming. In June of 1951 he began working for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company at the Llyod Mine. Oliver then went to work for the Republic Mine also owned by Cleveland Cliffs. As the underground mines were shutting down, Oliver got laid off from the Republic Mine and started a job as a Production Supervisor at the Groveland Mine owned by the Hanna Mining Company, located in Randville, Michigan near Iron Mountain. While working as Supervisor Oliver got a part time job working 8 hours per day doing Mason work for the Schuette Movers and Builders who were contracted to move the homes from Park City and North Republic to South Republic. When the Ericson Oil Company of Republic and Ishpeming built a IGA Store in South Republic, Oliver was contacted to serve as manager which he did for 2 years. Following the shut down of the Groveland Mine Oliver in 1981 was kept on as Mine Security until 1982 when he was put on pension after 30 years of service with the Hanna Mine. He was only 49 years old so he decided to purchase a truck and went cross country trucking over the 48 states. He spent many years trucking before retiring in 1999. After retirement Oliver and Mary Ann wintered in Las Vegas, NV and Lake Havasu City, AZ where Oliver enjoyed golfing.

Oliver married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann Ritola, who was from Park City, a suburb of Republic. They were married in 1954 and resided in Republic. They had 4 children, Curtis, Keith, Judith, and Scott.

Oliver was a member of the Republic Lions Club where he was President, Secretary, and Treasurer. He was a member of the American Legion, the Bethany Lutheran Church Council, Wawanowin Country Club, the Republic-Michigamme School Board, and was a member of the Ishpeming Elks Club.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years Mary Ann, brothers Carl Voegtline Sr. of Ishpeming, and James (Gisela) Voegtline of Mesa, AZ, 4 children- Curtis (Vickie) Voegtline of Michigamme, Keith (Barbi) Voegtline of Plattsmouth, NE, Judy (Jerry) Senske of Ishpeming, Scott Voegtline and Flor of Pecos, TX, 7 grandchildren- Ashley (Joe) Snell, Curtis Voegtline Jr., Amber (Jared) Tuominen, Lance Voegtline, Jeremy (Shalina) Senske, Jason (Crystal) Senske, Jeffrey (Jamie) Senske, 13 great grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews. Brothers in law Wilho Ritola of Republic, and David Laitala of Michigamme. He was preceded in death by his parents Spalding and Irene.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 12:00 noon until 1:00pm on Thursday August 18th, 2016 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic. A memorial service will follow at 1:00pm at the Bethany Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kevin Kaiser officiating. A luncheon will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Bethany Lutheran Church of Republic or Messiah Lutheran Church of Marquette.
