IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Norman Terence
Mitchell
November 4, 1938 – November 1, 2018
On November 1, 2018, Norman Terence Mitchell, 79, passed away peacefully at his home in Republic, Michigan surrounded by family. Norman was born November 4, 1938 in Champion, MI to Norman S. and Martha D. (Krummi) Mitchell. After high school, Norman proudly served in the US Navy as a Fire Control Technician, FT2 aboard the Destroyer USS Jenkins. Honorably discharged, Norman went on to work as a Service Technician for Burroughs in Chicago where he met the late Maureen Butler Serpico who would later become his wife. Though the two of them, and the children they'd have, would call various places home over the years, Norman was only ever truly home in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and avidly enjoyed hunting, trapping and fishing – opening days were observed with an almost religious reverence. Norman's love for all things nature extended to his interests in gardening and woodworking.
Norman is survived by his son, Brian (Stephanie) Mitchell, daughter Pamela (Brian) Mitchell-Kent; grandchildren Reilly and Lillian Mitchell, Oliver and Lochlan Kent; brothers J. William (Susan), James (Mary) and Steven Lee Mitchell and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. Norman was preceded in death by his parents, mother to his children Maureen, and their young son, Norman Terence "Terry" Mitchell II.
In accordance with Norman's wishes, a private memorial will be held on July 4, 2019 in Michigamme. In lieu of flowers, his children ask that memorial donations be directed to the Iron Mountain VA Medical Center. His children also extend a special thanks to UP Home Heath & Hospice for their compassionate care in Norman's final days.
