Republic – Norman A. Martti, age 91, of 260 Birch St., Republic, passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at his home. He had been in the loving care of his family and the Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice at the time of his death.
Norman was born January 31, 1924 in the family home in Republic, MI the son of Ausust and Lempi (Byyttala) Martti. Norman attended the Republic School and later received his GED. Norman served in the United States Army in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II. Following the War he returned to Republic and had resided there since. Norman worked for CCI for many years in various positions at the Republic Mine and later at the Tilden Mine retiring in 1986.
Norman was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church where he had served on the church council. He was also a member of the Republic VFW, Grant-Nyman Post. Norman enjoyed hunting in his younger years and will be remembered as the family handy-man.
Survivors include two daughters – Melanie Martti of Ishpeming, Lynn (Mark) Probert of Virginia Beach, VA, son Brian Martti of Republic, 7 grandchildren – James E. (Angel) Cox, Billy J. Cox, April Cox, Nathan Cox, Christa Cox, Shannon Probert, Shelby Probert, along with several great grandchildren including Elsie Michele, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Elsie in 2001, along with sisters and brothers – Elsie Skogman, Stella Skogman, Elvi Oja, Elmer "Casey" Martti and infant siblings Elmi and Howard Martti.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00am – 1:00pm on Monday November 23, 2015 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Monday at the church with the Rev. Kevin Kaiser to officiate. Military Honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380. Interment will take place at the Republic Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the services in the church hall.
