Obituary

Michigamme – Norman D. Johnson, age 90, passed away at Harris Hill Nursing Facility in Willliamsville, New York, where he had been a resident for the past three years. Norman was born October 10th, 1922 in Ishpeming to Julius and Elizabeth (Libbie Devine) Johnson. He graduated from Ishpeming High School, class of 1940, and from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Marketing in 1951. Norman served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, being stationed in Cairo, Egypt, attaining the rank of Staff Sargent. Norman was the Michigan Blue Cross Hospital Relations Representative for the Upper Peninsula, retiring in 1982. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Ishpeming where he also served as deacon and president of the congregation. He was the president of the Alger/Marquette County MSU Alumni Club. Norman loved music. He was an avid drummer who played in several local bands including the vocal group "Allegro", and the "Westerly Winds". He was an Ishpeming High School cheerleader, and a member of the Ishpeming Elks club. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor. Norman married Elizabeth (Eggan) Johnson August 30, 1952. He is survived by a son Jeffrey S. (Donna) of Anchorage, Alaska, daughters Nancy (Jim) Rycyna of East Amherst, New York, and Anne (Jay) Heilmann of Mequon, Wisconsin. His beloved grandchildren Jaclyn, Kevin, and Brian Rycyna; Jacob, Matthew, and Catherine Heilmann, and Sunny and Sabrina Hallmark, will miss him more than words can convey. He enjoyed his many wonderful nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and six siblings. His youngest brother Julius R. Johnson, resides in West Palm Beach, Florida. A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 26, 2012 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Ishpeming, with Bishop Thomas Skrenes and Pastor Kenneth Lahners officiating. Interment will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery. Friends may call at the Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday October 26th from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service. The family invites friends and family to a small dinner immediately following the service in the church's fellowship hall.
