Obituary

Marquette – Neil W. Anderson, age 81, longtime Ishpeming resident and current Marquette resident passed away on Sunday September 20, 2015 at UP Health System Marquette following an apparent stroke on Friday evening.

Neil was born June 18, 1934 in Ishpeming the son of the late William T. Anderson and Helen Deroche. Neil was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1952 and attended Northern Michigan University. Neil served in the United States Navy, stateside during the Korean War. Neil worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. for 30+ years, retiring as general foreman of the pellet plant at the Tilden Mine. Following his retirement, Neil owned and operated the Norgetown and Negaunee Laundromat's for nearly 10 years in the mid 1980's to mid 1990's. Neil served as a volunteer at the Ishpeming Community Federal Credit Union (currently the Tru North Credit Union) since 1972, being elected to the board of directors in 1975, and has served as it's president from 1989 until the present time. Neil also served as a commissioner on the Marquette County Road Commission for the past 8 years.

Neil truly loved Ishpeming and was an avid supporter of the Ishpeming Hematites football and basketball programs, along with the Green Bay Packers. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ishpeming Elks Club, the Ishpeming American Legion and Perky's Wednesday Men's Club. He enjoyed the fall bird and deer hunting seasons.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 6 years, Betty Anderson of Marquette; 6 children – Neil (Beth) Anderson of Green Bay, WI, Lori (Todd) Neale of Carrollton, TX, Gregg (Roxanna) Anderson of Ishpeming, a very special daughter Kay Ellen Anderson residing at Cedar Hills in Ishpeming, Toni Barnum and her husband Greg Murphy of Minneapolis, MN and Shelli Manzoline and her husband Darren Shaughnessy of Minneapolis, MN; 6 sisters – Susan Perry, Jean (Jim) Junak, Sheila (Tom) Thornton, Betty (Angelo) Bosio and Mary Jo (Larry) Bussone all of Ishpeming and Fran (Joel) Schneider of Schaumburg, IL; 2 brothers – William (Charlotte) Anderson of Ishpeming and Terry (Carol) Anderson of Grand Junction, CO; 6 grandchildren – Neil (Mei), Brandon (Carmen) and Zack Anderson, Michael and McKenna Neale and Miranda Shaughnessy; two great grandchildren Vera and Grace Anderson; his mother in law Margueritte Thibodeau of Ishpeming along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife Kay Anderson in 2007 and a sister Julianne Trewhella.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00am – 1:00pm on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00pm on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2015 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Dan Moll & Fr. Greg Heikkala to con-celebrate the Mass.

The Upper Peninsula Honor Guard Team will accord Military Honors at the conclusion of the Mass. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the services in the church hall.

Pallbearers will be Neil, Gregg, Brandon, Terry & William Anderson, Angelo Bosio and Larry Bussone.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the St. Joseph Memorial Fund, 1889 Prairie Ave., Ishpeming, MI 49849.

The family wishes to thank the Doctors, Nurses and Staff in the ICU and on the 6th Floor at UP Health System Marquette for their care and compassion shown to Neil and his entire family.
