Myrtle "Myrt" Greenwood, 96, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2016, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility, where she had been a resident for the past 4 ½ years.
Myrt was born on September 13, 1919, in Stambaugh, Michigan, to Neil and Hilma Baker and was a graduate of Stambaugh High School, class of 1937. She married Verden "Red" Greenwood on February 7, 1944, in Boston, Massachusetts. After Red's military service, they settled in Ishpeming when Red found employment with a mining company in the area,
Myrt worked for a number of years after high school at the family grocery store in Stambaugh and had many happy memories and humorous stories to relate about that time. Following her marriage, she devoted her time to family, church, and community. She was an excellent cook and baker, and regular family gatherings around her dining room table were filled with love, good company and great food. Her cinnamon bread recipe will always be a part of the traditional Christmas brunch. She shared her talents with others through her volunteer activities on the coffee cart at Bell Hospital, visitation at area nursing homes, and service at the Mission Covenant Church.
Myrt enjoyed snowmobiling and cross-country skiing for many years, but one of her favorite things was driving off with their trailer to visit favorite camping spots, especially Chicagoan Lake (Pentoga Park) where she and Red had met when they were in high school.
Surviving are her three children, Sandra (Ronald) Smetana, Bruce (Norma) Greenwood, and Kathryn Thibeault; grandchildren Lynn (Troy) Ball, Cindy Greenwood, Kimberly Smiley, Amanda (Jason) Pilarski, Alan (Nicole) Whitford, and Michael (Jennifer Sera) Whitford; great-grandchildren Rylee and Quinn Whitford, Brenden Thibeault, Alyssa Ball, and Skyler Van Horn; and great-great grandson Koltenn Thibeault. Myrt is also survived by a sister, Bena Hammar, several cousins, nieces and nephews and special friends Judy and Donald Meyer. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2004, her parents, three brothers, Earl, Ed, and Roy Baker, one sister, Alice Rusu, and son-in-law Ron Thibeault
