Negaunee – Michael J. Skewis Jr., age 41, passed away peacefully following a sudden illness on Thursday November 5, 2009 in Southern Wisconsin where he was working at this time.
Michael was born June 15, 1968 in Ishpeming the son of Michael J. Sr. and Susan (Bushong) Skewis. He was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1986. Michael served his country in the United States Army from Jan. of 1987 – May of 1991 which included serving during the Gulf War in operation Desert Storm. He returned to this area following the service and was an apprentice Boilermaker for 4 years, prior to earning his Journeyman Boilermaker status. Michael worked with the Boilermakers Local #169 for the past 15 years, working on projects throughout the United States.
Michael had taken up the game of golf in recent years, and enjoyed playing at the Wawonowin Country Club where he had been a member. In his youth he enjoyed playing baseball and once pitched a no-hitter in little league.
Survivors include his wife Jana Skewis of Negaunee, two daughters – Michaela and Morgan Skewis both of Negaunee, his parents Michael Sr. and Susan Skewis of Ishpeming, maternal grandmother Gloriana Bushong of Ishpeming, paternal grandmother Mary Skewis of Ishpeming, aunts and uncles – Sandra Hebert, Sheila (Al) Sullivan, Lee (Shirley) Bushong, and Leslie Bushong all of Ishpeming, Lloyd (Diana) Bushong of Bismarck, ND, Sharon Johnson of Ishpeming, Jim (Nancy) Skewis of Negaunee, Peggy (Gary) Petersen of Ishpeming and Rosemary (Roland) Korpi of Ishpeming, his mother-in-law and father-in-law – Barb and Ed Staab of Oil City, PA, a very special sister-in-law Diana Staab of Oil City, PA, along with numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his son Richard Burchfield in 2005, and his grandfathers – Earl Bushong and Wallace Skewis.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 4 until 7 pm on Monday Nov. 9, 2009, and again from 11am until 1pm Tuesday Nov. 10, 2009 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home. A celebration of life and sharing of memories will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery, where the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380 will hold Military Honors.
Pallbearers will be brother Boilermakers - Lee Bushong, Beau Bushong, Tim Miller, Jim Caloutte, Chris Chouinard, and Al Sullivan.
