Michigamme, MI- Michael James Nixon age 67 of HC1-Box 2000 Michigamme, MI entered eternal life at home on Saturday, February 19, 2011 under the loving care of his family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Michael was born June 3, 1943 in Sault Ste. Marie, MI to Elgin and Gertrude Nixon graduating from Sault Ste Marie High. He graduated from Michigan Tech in 1973 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Michael was a Michigamme resident since 1977. He was a U.S. Army veteran during the Vietnam era. He worked for Cleveland Cliffs first at the 504 Spruce Street office and then Empire Mine where he retired in 2000 with 24 years of service.

Michael loved his home on the lake where he could enjoy his many hobbies through the years including fast boats and snowmobiles. An old car enthusiast he also enjoyed driving and caring for his 1970 Chevelle. He most enjoyed sharing his knowledge with his three grandsons,

Surviving him are his wife of 35 years, Joan; daughter Jeanette (Mark) Pranga and three grandsons, Shane, Dylan and Logan all of Warren, MI; brother Dennis (Debra) Nixon of Sault Ste Marie, MI; sister-in-law Dee Nixon of Sault Ste Marie, MI; several nieces and nephews and his best friend of 58 years Andy Harma of Delton, MI. Michael was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Sheri Ann and brothers David and Ronald.

Our family wishes to thank all who supported Michael and his family in the past months. Their names go unmentioned, but will always be remembered in our hearts.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 21, 2011 from 4:00-7:00pm at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming, where Military Honors will be conduct by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380 at 7:00PM. Graveside services will be held at Donaldson Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to Lake Superior Hospice.
