Ishpeming- Michael J. Coluccio, "Mike," age 92, a life long Ishpeming resident passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette.
Mike was born March 14, 1924 in Ishpeming to John & Lucy (Barbiere) Coluccio. He graduated from Ishpeming High School, class of 1942. Following graduation Michael served in the U.S. Army-Air Force during World War II. He was a Radio Operator with the 48th Troop Carrier Squadron. He spent 3 years in Europe in the battles of Rome-Arno, Southern France and Rhineland.
Mike worked over eight years at Cleveland Cliffs at the Lloyd and Mather B Mines. He was later employed as a meat cutter "butcher" for many local grocery stores and restaurants.
Mike was a lifetime member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and a devout Christian. He was an excellent cribbage player, participating in the Ishpeming Cribbage League for many years. He spent much of his free time hunting and fishing, always with a hunting dog by his side. Mike was a passionate sports enthusiast, a proud Ishpeming Hematite supporter, and a Packer and Tigers fan. He enjoyed playing slow pitch softball where he was a pitcher for many years. Mike was a devoted family man, and nothing gave him greater pride than to serve as a faithful caretaker to his wife of 56 years, Alice, until her passing in 2005.
Mike is survived by his daughter Ann Marie (Richard) Champion of Cave Creek, AZ, grandchildren: Dana (Gordon) Jakel of Scottsdale, AZ, Joshua Koepp of Grand Rapids, MI, Tina (Shaun) Rivord of Gwinn, MI, Tara (Chad) Asgaard of Ishpeming, MI and Debbie Coluccio of Ishpeming, MI; and great grandchildren, Tristan, Harper, Ava, Gianna, Makayla and Makenna, along with many beloved onieces and nephews. Mike was preceded in death by parents, wife Alice, a son Ronald, daughter in law Susan and 3 brothers: Dominic, Sylvester and James Coluccio.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 pm on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ishpeming with Fr. Larry Van Damme officiating.
Mike's family will greet relatives and friends at St. Johns Catholic Church on Thursday from 12:30 pm until the time of service at 2:00 pm. A luncheon will be held at K/D Hall following the service.
Military Honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380.
