National Mine - Michael Gary Alderton, age 66, of National Mine, passed away on Monday, July 19, 2021 at the Trillium House in Marquette under care of UP Home Health and Hospice.

Michael was born to Levi Lloyd and Ella Mae (Cairns) VanLuven on December 1, 1954, in Sault Ste. Marie. He grew up in Sault Ste. Marie and moved to National Mine area around age 10. He attended National Mine High Schools graduating with the class of 1973.

He worked as an iron worker for many years retiring at age 50. He coached Hickey's Women's League Softball Team for 30 years and ran the Salvation Army / Hickey's Benefit for years as well. He was an avid sports fan supporting the Detroit Tigers and the Green Bay Packers.

Michael is survived by his siblings, Elaine Anderson of Ishpeming, Marsha Fraser of Ishpeming, Fred VanLuven of National Mine, Tammy Daily of Iowa and step-sister Janet Talentino-Jones of Anchorage, AK. Also survived by Summer Wright and her daughter Aza, his handyman Jacob Olson, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, stepdad Fred Alderton, sisters Penny Carlson, Patti Nickerson, niece Angie Nickerson, stepsister Sandra LeClair, stepbrother Barry Alderton.

A funeral will be held at the Bjork and Zhulkie Funeral Home on Thursday, July 22, 2021 at 3:00 PM with Rev. D. Michael Carrier officiating. Visitation will take place starting two hours prior at 1:00 PM until the time of service.
