Pittsburgh, PA – Matthew A. Kauppila, age 60, of 91150 Tumbleweed Run, Laurel, MD, passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2015 at the Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA where he had been air lifted to following a stroke that he had suffered the previous week.
Matt was born June 18, 1955 in Ishpeming, MI the son of the late Toivo "T.A." and Ann (Sundblad) Kauppila. He attended grammar school in Ishpeming prior to moving to Colorado with his family during his high school years. He attended college in CO, where he had received in bachelor of science degree. He worked for a short period in Texas and then moved to Laurel, MD where he had resided for the past 28 years, working as a construction manger for the Bozzuto Construction Co.
Matt especially enjoyed his time spent at hunting camp in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, affectionately known as "The Shack", along with always being ready for a game of cribbage which he had a great passion for. Matt also enjoyed his "second family", the Grigg's in Ishpeming on holidays, vacations and special occasions.
Survivors include 2 brothers – Philip Kauppila (Kelly Thomson) of Glenwood Springs, CO and Franz (Tyra) Kauppila of Rifle, CO, his best friend David (Trish) Grigg & family, including Erin & Jamie Faull and their children Abby and Andy, along with numerous cousins.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 19, 2015 at "The Shack" at 3:00pm with the Rev. Rob Faull presiding. A pot luck will follow at "The Shack" in the pole barn.
