Altoona, FL- Matthew Bernard Amel, age 84, of Altoona, FL and a longtime summer resident of the Dead River Basin passed away on Friday, August 6, 2021.

Matthew was born in Marquette, Michigan on June 1, 1937, a son of the late Helen Mary (Coffey) and Matthew Joseph Amel.

Matt graduated from Ishpeming High School, Class of 1955 and received a bachelor's degree from Northern Michigan University.  He served his country in the U.S. Army 1955-1957.

Matt worked the State of Michigan, Department of Corrections, he retired in 1991 as Assistant Deputy Warden from Carson City Corrections Facility.

Matt was a former member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Wawonowin Golf Club where he enjoyed golfing and was an avid sports fan.

Matt is survived by his wife Sharon (Bengson) Amel, and many nieces and nephews, who loved Uncle Matt.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday August 30, 2021 at 11:00 am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ishpeming with Fr. Ryan Ford officiating.  A greeting will take place from 10:30 am until the time of the Mass.

A dessert social will follow.
