Mary H. "Norine" Gleason, age 89, longtime Ishpeming resident passed away Friday, June 9, 2023, at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay.
Norine was born in Ishpeming, Michigan on August 13, 1933, a daughter of the late John F. and Anna E. (Thornton) Gleason.
She graduated from Ishpeming High School, Class of 1952 and became a Registered X-ray Technician studying in Chicago and then worked in Chicago hospitals for several years and after moving back to Ishpeming worked at the former St. Luke's Hospital and Marquette General Hospital for 40 years. Norine was known for her professional, kind, and helpful personality as an employee. She was a mentor to many people starting out in the radiology tech field.
Norine or "Nonie" (as her friends and family called her) enjoyed needle work, loved politics, and kept up with current news. She was an avid reader, enjoyed Sudoku puzzles and playing card games. She collected teacups and baby dolls. She was interested in fashion and made sure she was best dressed when receiving visitors. She was proud of her Irish heritage, claimed she was the last true 100% Irish American living in Ishpeming. Norine was an avid Detroit Tigers fan, and a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ishpeming. She provided rides for many people who wanted to attend Saturday afternoon Mass. Norine loved her Catholic faith and was devoted to praying the Rosary every day.
Norine is survived by dear friends Lynn Bellmore, Liam Hughes, both of Ishpeming and Diane, D. Smyth-Rohlof of Lower Michigan, along with neighbors and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Sister Catherine Ann Gleason and 2 brothers John and Jimmy Gleason.
A Rosary service will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday June 15, 2023, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, a visitation to follow and A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 pm with Fr. Christian Flagstadt to officiate.
Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jim Bellmore, Brian Hughes, Ben Argall, John Anderson, and Tom Lucas.
