Obituary

Michigamme, MI – Mary Louise Murray, age 93, of 352 E. Main St., Michigamme, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 13, 2024, surrounded by her loving family and in the care of Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice.

Mary was born Mary Louise Welcher on February 3, 1931, in Detroit to the late Harold and Esther (Retz) Welcher. She attended school until she was 16, dropping out to work and support her mother and brother. Mary married Herbert Murray on October 21, 1950. They were united in marriage for 52 years when Herb passed away in 2002.

Together Herb and Mary raised five children. For 20 years they owned and operated Herb and Mary's Bar and Restaurant where they were known for their kindness and hospitality. In 1979 they moved to Florida where Mary worked as a waitress for another 20 years. Upon the passing of her husband in 2002, she moved back to Michigamme where she lived with her daughter Virginia and son-in-law Paul Olson. Mary discovered much joy in her card-making hobby, along with writing poetry for special occasions. Mary will be remembered as a gentle soul and will be missed by her Red Hat friends and those at the Michigamme Senior Meals. Mary was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Champion. She had a strong faith which was evident in her walk with Jesus.

Mary is survived by 4 children – Virginia (Paul) Olson of Michigamme, Victoria Ricketts of Ishpeming, Gordon (Sherry) Murray and Guy (Diane) Murray both of Diorite, 19 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren with one more on the way and a great great grandchild, brother Harold "Bud" Welcher of Westland, MI, along with a niece and two nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her husband Herbert, her parents, stepfather James Robertson, daughter Katherine Mroz, son-in-law Chuck Ricketts, a granddaughter, and two great-granddaughters.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Champion. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the church at 12 noon on Wednesday with the Rev. Christian Flagstadt to officiate. A luncheon will follow the service in the church hall. The interment will take place at the Lakeview Cemetery in Michigamme.
