Obituary

Ishpeming – Mary N. Martin, age 90 of 2104 Jackson Ave., Ishpeming passed away at 1:00am on Tuesday July 19, 2011 at the Marquette Co. Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming, where she had resided since January 2009.

Mary was born December 25, 1920 in Princeton, MI the daughter of the late Herman & Theresa (Marinello) Nocenti, and was a life long area resident. She attended St. Paul's Catholic School in Negaunee and later received her high school diploma in 1979 through the Negaunee Community Schools. She worked at Signal Battery in Milwaukee during World War II, the dress factory in Negaunee, the H.W. Gossard Co. in Ishpeming, and did housekeeping work into her later years.

Mary was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and had been active with the Women's guild. She was also a member of the Paisano Club. She liked to cook, bake, read, walk, grow flowers, pick blueberries in her younger years, go on picnics, and play card games. But most of all Mary loved being with family and friends. She was always very thankful for all she had.

Survivors include a daughter Susan (Ed) Gagnon of Negaunee; a son Terry (Jan) Martin of Ishpeming, ; a grandson James (Cheri) Donato; granddaughter Gina Donato; great granddaughters – Melissa, Jessica and Kaitlyn; son-in-law David (Gert) Nowicki. Mary loved and cherished many good friends and neighbors, including her roommate and special friend Florence.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John in 1972, daughter Jean Nowicki in 2004, a sister Gilda Nocenti in 2006, and a brother Cyril Nocenti in 2002.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00am - 11:30am on Thursday July 21, 2011 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30am on Thursday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. James Challancin to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Memorial Fund or to the Marquette Co. Medical Care Facility, Activities Fund in Mary's memory.


The family wishes to express their thanks and gratitude to the Marquette Co. Medical Care Facility staff and Dr. Grossman for the excellent care they provided, that allowed her to live a better quality of life. Their kindness and compassion will always be remembered.
