Maria Ellen Louise "Mary Lou" Martin

Republic - Maria "Mary Lou" Martin, age 76 of 453 Republic Ave, Republic, passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at the Marquette General Hospital, she had been in ill health for the past 2 months.


Mary Lou was born September 23, 1934 in Republic the daughter of the late Sanfred and Mathilda (Tuomi) Olson. She was a graduate of the Republic high School, Class of 1952. She married Kenneth E. Martin on November 27, 1954 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic. Mary Lou worked first as a clerk at the Red Owl Grocery Store in Marquette, then as a waitress at Polkki's Restaurant in Humboldt. She went on to cook at the Silver Lake Resort in Channing, and retired as a cook from Mt. Shasta in Michigamme.


Mary Lou was a lifelong Republic resident, where she was an active member of the community serving as President of the Republic Historical Society for 10 years, and was a member of the Republic Ethnic Days committee. As a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, she taught Sunday school for many years, served as church secretary for a few years, had been a member of the church council, and was active with the WELCA and the Bethany Lutheran Quilters. Other hobbies and activities included the 4-H Club, serving as Cub Scout leader for many years, the Red Hat Society, quilting, knitting and crocheting. Although her hobbies kept her busy she would always find time for her family, especially her grandchildren whom she adored.


Survivors include her husband Kenneth E. Martin of Republic, 4 sons – Gary Martin of Republic, Larry (Linda) Martin of Charlton, MA, Brian (Tammy) Martin of Williamstown, KY, and Michael (Kimberly) Martin of Republic, along with Paul Vierela of Tahuya, WA who Mary Lou always referred to as her 5th son, a brother Sanfred (Virginia)Olson of Marquette, 2 sisters-in-law – Jean Olson of Republic and Shirley (Wayne) Bartle of Marquette, grandchildren – David Martin of Ishpeming, Eleanor and Grace Martin of Republic, Wade and Tiffany Martin of Crandon, WI and Joshua and Travis Martin of Williamstown, KY, great grandchildren – Lillee and Brayden Martin of Ishpeming, step-grandchildren – Chris (Donna) Lamere of Ishpeming, Amy Lamere of Crandon, WI, Aaron Simoneau of Charlton, MA, Vannessa (Mark) Bradby of Minneapolis, MN, along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Elmer Olson, a sister Eleanor Etelamaki, and 2 brothers-in-law – Wilhart Etelamaki and Charles Martin.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 12:00noon until 2:00pm on Monday, July 18, 2011 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic. Funeral services will follow at 2:00pm on Monday at the Bethany Lutheran Church with the Rev. Katherine Finegan to officiate. Interment will take place at the Republic Cemetery.


Pallbearers will be her five sons along with Bob Martin.
